Xinjiang State Delegation Visits PCI, Launches First Mobile Urdu App

A State Delegation, led by Mr. Luo Fuyong – Director General of the Information Office of the People’s Government of Xinjiang – visited the Pakistan-China Institute on Wednesday, 3rd February 2016. The delegation comprised of Mr. Elat Saly, the Deputy Director of Xinjiang’s Information Office’ Mr. Ji Wenlin, Section Chief for the Cyberspace Administration of China; Mr. Ai Zupeng, Chief Editor of Watching Media; Mr. Li Wanhui, Director of New Media Center of Party Publicity Department and the Chief Editor of Tianshan Network; Mr. Ding Xiaolun, President Youlin Magazine; Mr. Ouyang Hongliang, CEO Watching Media and other members of the Watching Media Group. Mr. Mustafa Hyder Sayed, Executive Director of the Pakistan-China Institute received the delegation and formally introduced the think-tank and its initiatives to the visiting delegates. Ms. Aiza Azam, Director Projects at PCI gave a detailed presentation that highlighted the Pakistan-China Institution’s role in promoting relations between the two countries.

Mentioning old ties between both the countries, Mr. Mustafa Sayed highlighted PCI’s efforts to foster fruitful cooperation between organizations from both countries in order to enhance cultural as well as diplomatic ties. He also added that in the context of the One Belt, One Road Initiative and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, the Xinjiang Autonomous Region has become extremely important as it acts as a gateway between the countries. “Under Mr. Fuyong’s leadership, Xinjiang can play a very important role in increasing people-to-people contact, cultural integration, as well as economic exchanges.

Mr. Fuyong expressed that he was delighted to visit Pakistan and for having the opportunity to discuss prospective collaboration with the Pakistan-China Institute. “Although we live in different time zones and have different cultures, but I feel like I’m visiting my brothers because Pakistanis are family to us,” he said. He highlighted that that Xinjiang’s Information Office and the Pakistan-China Institute can work together to act as a bridge for people-to-people connectivity and as a channel for improving each others understanding about their respective cultures and countries. They can also function as a platform for joint consultation, development, high-level exchanges and usher a positive sentiment among the people for the development of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. “We have had opportunities in the past, and we must seize and create more opportunities in the future as well,” he added. Highlighting the role that media is playing, Mr. Mustafa Hyder Sayed appreciated the role that Watching Media is playing by launching the Urdu Mobile App in Pakistan, with PCI’s cooperation.

The two sides also reached a mutual understanding for making the Watching Media Urdu App the official media partners for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. They also agreed to enhance organizational cooperation in terms of arranging international conferences as well as cultural and business events to promote the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and further strengthen people-to-people relations. Mr. Mustafa also mentioned that PCI has already instituted the CPEC Media Forum – a body that would facilitate all issues related to media and broadcasting for the Economic Corridor Project.

Later in the evening, the Pakistan-China Institute and the Watching Media Group jointly hosted the launch of the First Urdu Mobile App that would focus on promoting media and culture in relation to China’s One Belt, One Road Initiative. The Launching Ceremony was held at the Serena Hotel.

Based in Xinjiang, China, Watching Media is a national information releasing platform. An information issuing platform on China’s Belt and Road Initiative, the group also provides an international political and commercial platform for high-level meetings.

The Launching Ceremony was well attended by Pakistani parliamentarians, representatives from Watching Media, Chinese students studying in Pakistan, and other members of civil society. Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Mr. Pervaiz Rashid was the Guest of Honor at the occasion and was joined by various other honourable guests including the Director General Xinjiang Information Office, Mr. Lou Fuyong, the Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan, Mr. Sun Weidong, and the Section Chief of Central Network Information Transmission Bureau, Mr. Ji Wenlin.

In his keynote address, Mr. Pervaiz Rashid talked about how the upcoming app would act as a forum of exchange between the people of China and Pakistan. “Media is a strong tool of connectivity and it must be used to bridge the gap between the people of both countries,” he reiterated. The Minister also appreciated the efforts of the Pakistan-China Institute and the role that it has consistently played in promoting people-to-people relations between China and Pakistan. H.E. Ambassador Sun Weidong also emphasized that the introduction of this unique app would give cultures from Pakistan and China an opportunity to thrive in each other’s countries and would allow the people to understand each other better.

The proposed Urdu app aims to be the most influential and cutting-edge medium of information dissemination by breaking the barriers faced by usual English-language apps. It would be able to bring news relating to culture, heritage, and history from China and elsewhere to 130 million mobile users in Pakistan.

The Pakistan-China Institute, Watching Media Group, and the Xinjiang Information Office agreed to extend cooperation with each other in all areas related to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor in the future.
