Tuesday, June 13, 2013:  The Chairman of the Pakistan-China Institute, Senator Mushahid Hussain returned from a visit to China where he attended and addressed two major conferences apart from meeting Chinese leaders.  The first conference was organized at Xian, the ancient Chinese city which was a starting point of the historic silk route, by the Communist Party of China (CPC) during May 29-31 on “Building a Beautiful Asia and Promoting Green Development” in cooperation with the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP).  The second conference in Kunming on June 5-8, was the China-South Asia Expo and Friendship in Business Forum.

At the Xian conference, Senator Mushahid Hussain was elected as Chairman of the Drafting Committee in his capacity as Special Rappoteur of ICAPP and Member of the ICAPP Standing Committee.  At the ICAPP conference, Senator Mushahid Hussain also held a meeting along with other ICAPP leaders with the Vice President of China Li Yuanchao.

The ICAPP troika including the Chairman of ICAPP, H.E. Jose de Venecia and the Co-Chairman and Secretary General of ICAPP, Mr. Chung Eui Yong as well as Senator Mushahid Hussain, also had a meeting with Wang Jairui, Minister of the International Department of the Central Committee of CPC.

At Kunming, the Chairman of the Pakistan-China Institute was leader of the Pakistan delegation to the China-South Asia Forum where he addressed the forum along with other top leaders of South Asia.  In his speech, Senator Mushahid Hussain underlined the significance of Kunming Forum given the recent visit of Premier Li Keqiang to South Asia, India and Pakistan, the shift in the global balance of economic, cultural and political power from the West to East and the emergence of a new regionalism trend of economy and energy which has resulted in the emergence of what Senator Mushahid Hussain termed as “Greater South Asia”, which he said included China, the countries of South Asian sub-continent, Myanmar, Afghanistan and Iran.  He also said that Kunming in Southern China and Kashgar in Central West China would play a pivotal role in Chinese cities that would be vital in building economic corridors between China and the neighbouring countries.  There was already a plan for railway linking Kunming with Yangon and Chittagong, while there was another plan to connect the Pakistani port of Gwadar on the Arabian sea with the Chinese city of Kashgar in the province of Xinjiang.

Senator Mushahid Hussain also offered to host the next China-South Asia Friendship Forum in Islamabad at the end of 2014 and he also proposed a Pakistan-China economic and cultural forum to be held in Islamabad in the first quarter of 2014.

The Chairman, Pakistan-China Institute has also been invited to attend first China-Pakistan think tank forum which will be convened in Beijing during August 30 – September 1, 2014.
